#Welcome to my classroom how to
My students do not know how to read and lack the basic technology proficiency needed to be successful in an online learning environment. I am teaching first graders, who missed the last quarter of in-person instruction in Kindergarten. This year brings a unique problem for me with teaching my students virtually. I was not proficient in any of these platforms, but I did know using some parts of them, and like many teachers, I am furiously learning so that I can keep up with my students. To successfully teach in a virtual setting, teachers need to be proficient in programs like GoogleMeet or Zoom, Google Classroom, Google Slides, Google Docs, Class Dojo, FlipGrid, Peardeck, Nearpod, and I could truly fill the rest of this blog post just naming different programs that are out there for teachers to use. Newhouse Academy has also achieved the gold standard in Careers Education Information Advice and Guidance, (CEIAG), in recognition of the first class support offered to students in this area.I thought I was technology literate, but then the pandemic hit and I, like all teachers, had to make the transition to teaching online. Many talented students have achieved recognition, both locally and nationally for their involvement in sport and performing arts their achievements are regularly celebrated by the academy. Outside of the curriculum, the school offers a wide range of opportunities for students to get involved in. This includes sports teams and clubs, performing arts activities and many trips and visits, including residential and overseas adventures. This will all enable us to support our students in having as much choice for their education and futures.

This approach nurtures all students to see challenges as opportunities to flourish. This mindset is placed at the heart of teaching and learning and our curriculum enables our students to develop both personally and academically. Newhouse Academy strives to instil in all students a belief that intelligence is an area where we can all improve if we work hard and see our mistakes as part of that learning journey. Our new academy believes that all students regardless of starting points, should be given the opportunity to achieve their goals in education. This is coupled with the determination to ensure all of our students achieve their desired destinations after Year 11 when they leave us. As part of the trust, we are committed to providing opportunities for all students in a school where the values of aspiration, integrity and respect are integral. Newhouse Academy, is part of the Hollingworth Learning Trust. Our staff are encouraged to be imaginative and creative in the classroom in order to deliver motivational and inspiring lessons. Our “high expectations agenda” to ensure both our students and staff are supported to deliver the highest standards is embedding itself in the academy’s culture. We are entering a new and exciting time for Newhouse Academy. I am very honoured to be the Headteacher of Newhouse Academy and it is a privilege to serve our students and our community.
